Guest, Alma Gonzalez Democratic Natioal Comittee Member, repersenting FL. serves as the Special Counsel for AFSCME Florida Council 79 having joined the organization's staff in 1999. AFSCME Florida has representation rights for over 250 thousand public employees in the state and university systems, and among various city, county, school board, and private non-profit hospital employers in the state of Florida. Since the 2000 Presidential election, Ms. Gonzalez has gained international renown for her involvement in election law enforcement and voter protection activity. She has an extensive legislative background having worked on federal legislative issues for the Mexican-American Legal Defense Fund in Washington D.C., the Florida Association of Counties, and AFSCME Florida. Her state legislative background includes serving as Legislative Director for the Florida Association of Counties, lobbyist for the Florida Association for Women Lawyers, and attorney for the Florida House of Representatives Majority and Democratic office, as well as a consultant to the Florida Conference of Black State Legislators. Her work as the Executive Director for the Florida Battered Women's Clemency Project earned her special recognition from the Florida First woman and the first Hispanic to serve as State Treasurer having been elected unanimously to a 4-year term in December 2008. In January 2011 Ms. Gonzalez became a member of the Democratic National Committee and was re-elected to a 4-year term in January 2013. She is a member of the Association of State Democratic Chairs.
